Wireless versus wired cameras: the honest trade-off
Wireless is easier to install and harder to rely on. Which matters more depends on what the system is for.
Wireless cameras remove the hardest part of an installation — getting cable to the camera. That is a genuine advantage and the reason they sell. What is less often said is what you give up.
Wireless still needs power
This surprises people regularly. Most 'wireless' cameras are wireless for data only and still need a power cable. Fully wireless means battery, and battery means either recharging every few months or accepting that the camera sleeps between motion events and misses the beginning of them.
Battery cameras also record on motion rather than continuously, so there is no continuous timeline — only clips of what the sensor decided was worth waking for.
Wired: one cable does everything
A wired IP camera uses Power over Ethernet, so a single Cat6 run carries both power and video. That has knock-on benefits people do not anticipate:
- Continuous recording, not motion clips.
- No wireless interference, and no competition with the building's wifi.
- Central power, so a UPS in the closet keeps every camera running through an outage.
- Bandwidth that does not degrade as more cameras are added.
Where wireless interference bites
In a dense Brooklyn or Queens building, the 2.4GHz band is congested with every neighbouring network. Video is a sustained, high-bandwidth stream — the least forgiving thing to put on a contended band. The result is dropped frames and gaps, and the gaps appear under load, which often means exactly when something is happening.
A reasonable rule
Wire anything that matters. Use wireless where cable genuinely cannot go, or where the camera is a convenience rather than a security control.
In practice most properties end up mixed: wired at entrances, interior choke points, and points of value; wireless at a shed, a far fence line, or a temporary position. That is a sound outcome. What is not sound is choosing wireless throughout to avoid an install cost, and discovering the compromise during an incident.
